Sibelius: Finlandia, Op. 26 - Starter
Grieg: Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16 - first movement - Main course
Alfvén: Swedish Rhapsody No. 1 (Midsummer Vigil), Op. 19 - Dessert
The first concert of a series showcasing the celebrated musical landscapes of Europe will take us north to present the unique world, colours and flavours of the people of Scandinavia. The musical theme of Sibelius's symphonic poem, which presents historical events, has become a national song for the Finnish people. Grieg learnt much from the German composers of his era. In his Piano Concerto in A minor, for instance, he is clearly influenced by Schumann's work of the same name, though Grieg's sound also possesses the distinctive features and mood of Norwegian music. Alfvén is served for dessert. His graceful rhapsody celebrates the night when the sun never sets in the far north and people mark Saint John's Eve with joyful merriment.
